Great Glen Way, Scotland: September 18 - 29, 2017

 Join us as we traverse coast to coast on one of great glen way 8Scotland’s premier long distance hiking trails, the Great Glen Way. Our holiday will begin in Edinburgh, where we will explore this historic and beautiful city before traveling north to the starting point of our trek. The trail, beginning in Fort William, follows the Caledonian Canal through a great rift in the central Highlands to the town of Inverness. Travelling on towpath and shoreline, we will pass through pristine forest and along several of Scotland’s most famous Lochs.

 

 

 

 

 

Intinerary

 

Day 1: Arrive Edinburg.great glen way 4

 

Day 2: Edinburg: Free day to explore Edinburg. Optional walking tour of Edinburg Castle, Royal Botanic Gardens, Holyrod Park. Meals provided (B).

 

Day 3: Edinburg to Fort William. Train to Fort William. Meals Provided (B, L).

 

Day 4: Fort Williams to Gairlochy, 12 miles. Passing the 12th century Inverlochy Castle, we departure Fort William and join the Caledonian Canal. Neptune’s Staircase, built in 1822, is the longest staircase loch in Brittan and is comprised of eight locks.  Dramatic views of Ben Nevis and Loch Linhe are evident throughout the day. Day 5: Gairlochy to Laggan, 13 miles. Traveling on forested trail, we will traverse the northern shore of Loch Lochy. Short detour to the Clan Cameron Museum at Achnacarry and St. Ciaran’s Church. Meals Provided (B,L).

 

Day 6: Laggan to Fort Augustus, 10 miles. Reaching our highest point on the canal, we will continue on the banks of Loch Oich through the native woodlands of Letterfeirn Nature Reserve. Invergarry Castle and Bridge of Oich greet us as we travel canal side paths. Meals Provided (B,L).

 

Day 7: Fort Augustus to Invermoriston, 8 miles. great glen way 10 Our most vertically challenging day, we will follow the high route above Loch Ness crossing moorland and forested slopes. Views of Loch Ness and the mountains to the south will dominate the day. Meals Provided (B,L).

 

Day 8: Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit, 13 miles. We continue on the more challenging high route past the Iron Age fort at Grotaig and across open moorlands. Expansive views of Loch Ness. Meals Provided (B,L).

 

Day 9: Drumnadrochit to Loch Laide, 10 miles. We follow the shores of Loch Ness and traverse the upland forest of Abriachan. Meals Provided (B,L).

 

Day 10: Loch Laide to Inverness, 11 miles. Our last day on the trail, we travel through forest and field to our final destination at Inverness Castle. Meals Provided (B,L).

 

Day 11: Inverness to Edinburg. Train to Edinburg. Meals Provided (B).

 

Day 12: Home
